Norfolk Rally

Sunday 09 Dec 2012 [20:41]
Two Teifi Valley Motor Club (TVMC) members and friends travelled all the way to Norfolk over the weekend to compete in the 200 mile annual Preston Road Rally. However, not one of them managed to finish the gruelling night event made up of mostly whites and muddy tracks, as Anwen Francis explains.

The Welsh crew were met with open arms as they arrived at the event organised by the Chelmsford Motor Club. The drivers and navigators Jamie Jukes, John Tyres (TVMC), Dilwyn John (TVMC), Edryd Evans, Michael Gilbey, Stuart Merry as well as supporters Gary Cwmmmawr and Dale Bowen.

' The rally was unlike any road rally around here. The tracks were nearly all muddy alongside huge crop fields, with large potholes and undulating ground. It was also a very long rally of around 200 miles. We didn't know what to expect and the terrain was quite a shock for us as drivers and navigators as well as the cars!' explained navigator Dilwyn John.

He added: ' The rally cars up there were made up of MGZR's, BMW's, Lada's and 205's amongst other cars with only one Mk2 Escort and they were all kitted out to face the mud. It wasn't an easy rally by any means, and unfortunately we didn't make it past the first petrol stop as we had a broken radiator.'

Jamie Jukes and his navigator Michael Gilbey didn't make it home either having completed a quarter of the rally due to the car overheating and John Tyres and Stuart Merry sadly had the wheel studs break and the wheel came off!
