It's never been done before, but experienced local rally driver Meirion Evans has accomplished a hat trick, being crowned Welsh Association of Motor Clubs Overall Road Rally Champion for the third year in succession. The 35 year old father of two, was recently awarded his silver trophy at the Welsh Association dinner at Llandrindod.

Competing in his Mk2 Escort, built by himself at his premises Wales Motor Sport Fabrication, Betws Ifan, Meirion was helped to glory by his faithful navigator, Iwan Jones of North Wales.

Not content with two overall championships, in 2013, Meirion had his sights set on a third championship win and nothing was going to stand in his way.

' I fell into the Welsh Championship in a way, and I'm a big believer that if you've won something it isn't luck, so the second year running in 2012, I had to prove it. When I won for the second time, I wanted to win again. I felt I had to win it again as I knew no one had ever taken the overall three times in a row even though some have tried for over 25 years!' explained Meirion, a Teifi Valley Motor Club member, who is already thinking about his next challenge.

This year, he will compete in the British Historic Championship and the RAC Championship. But he stresses that competing in forestry and tarmac this year is just a practice for next season.

Meirion explained: ' It's just to give me experience really, but I'm really enjoying it. On Sunday, we competed in the Red Kite Rally in Llandovery, and we were the fastest car on the last stage a stage of 15 miles and the longest stage of the rally, so we have a lot to look forward to.'

And the secret to his success? ' The car is always prepared, it's about good team work and communication,' concluded the champ.
